Your Pregnancy and Your Smile: What You Need to Know

Dental Patient Philadelphia PA

When you’re planning to welcome a new baby, your dental health may be the last thing on your mind. But as an expectant mother, the health of your teeth and gums is now more important than ever before.

The Dentists on the Square in Philly regularly see expectant moms. We’re sharing some important oral health information so that you can make the best health decisions for you and your growing baby.

Your cavity risk is higher during pregnancy than at other times. This can be due to specific cravings changing your diet, frequent vomiting that weakens tooth enamel, or overlooking your usual oral hygiene routine.

Continue to brush at least twice daily and floss once a day throughout your pregnancy. Rinse your mouth with baking soda and water after vomiting to neutralize acidity inside your mouth. Use fluoridated toothpaste to protect your tooth enamel. By taking good care of your teeth during pregnancy, you can avoid needing fillings and root canals soon after the delivery.

There is also a major risk of developing gum disease. Pregnancy hormones make your gums swell up and if you don’t keep them clean, gum disease can set in. This condition statistically increases the chance that your baby will be born prematurely and below a healthy birth weight.

Dental x-rays, dental cleanings, anesthetics, and even some dental work is safe during pregnancy. If our Philly dentist recommends urgent treatment for the sake of your baby, then go ahead and get it done right away. Non-urgent dental treatment can wait until after your baby arrives.

A healthy baby depends on your having a healthy smile. Call our office today to schedule your prenatal dental health checkup!

Dentists on the Square provides excellent care. For over a year, I have relied on them for everything: cleaning, a crown, and even an extraction. I have never liked going to dentists, but in DOTS I have found a dental office I actually enjoy visiting. Dr. Tewari and the entire DOTS staff are friendly, professional, and welcoming — most of all, they do awesome work!

DOTS is fantastic! I’ve been a long time patient and have referred many friends. Their staff and doctors are attentive, caring and always willing to sit down and plan out treatment and talk through your benefits. Thank you!

They actually have me excited to get implants. The staff is amazing and extremely kind. Very thorough and comprehensible, even with such a detailed process. Thank you!! I’m very happy to have been recommended to come here.

I highly recommend! The staff is really friendly and nice. I had my wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Roberts and Vince and they are great. I was really nervous to have that type of treatment but they reassured me that I would be okay and made it a good experience. It is so worth it!

Man, this place is THE BOMB!!! I thought that having to go through a root canal would be the worst experience of my life. Dr. Berenji and Kate caused great surprise and were simply astonishing.
